These kayaks are based in the village of Jyrkkä, right by the water near the hiking lodge Retkeilymaja. That said, they’re always ready for adventure and perfectly happy to spend longer stretches away from home. They especially love getting out on the water with new people!
The rental price includes a spray skirt, life vest, helmet and paddle.
From Ruukin Tupa’s backyard, you can launch directly into the canoeing and whitewater fishing route along the Nurmijoki River. The full stretch from Jyrkkä to the Koirakoski rapids is around 25 km and features multiple rapids, flowing river sections, and a few lakes. There are plenty of spots along the way where you can stop for a break, enjoy your packed lunch, or end your trip early — we can arrange pickup for both paddlers and boats.
From the lodge’s shore, you can also head out on a relaxed lake kayaking trip. Along the shores of Lake Kiltua and Lake Haajainen, you’ll find great rest stops where you can swim or cook sausages over an open fire.
Want to make it an overnight trip? Paddle out to Savisaari, a secluded island on Lake Haajainen, where you can spend the night in a genuine wilderness hut. The rustic Savisaari Fishing Hut includes a wood-heated sauna.
For an adventurous combo, try kayaking and hiking in one trip. Paddle from Jyrkkä to the Kiusalankangas lean-to shelter (about 15 km), then hike back to Ruukin Tupa via the Volokinpolku Trail (another 15 km). It’s a full-day outing, but you can also take it slow and spend the night at the Savisaari Fishing Hut along the way.
Only 368 cm long, this kayak is easy to handle both on water and on land. The Expedition Åfjord is a fantastic sea kayak for hobby paddlers, offering a unique blend of speed, stability and effortless manoeuvrability. Material: Triple-layer HD polyethylene.
